I was in Hilton Head, SC for summer vacation and was looking for some sushi and a Japanese steakhouse. I took on Yelp and came across this place. This restaurant was absolutely amazing. I can't remember our cooks name but he did an excellent job. All the food was seasoned to perfection!!! I ordered the chicken and shrimp with steamed rice. Our cook put on a great show as well. I also enjoyed how the place was kid friendly as we had 2 kids in our group. We were sat immediately upon arriving into a very nice area, which I think they often use for private parties. It was so good I wanted to go back the next day!!!

Probably the most mediocre hibachi ive ever had in my life. Lacks flavor. No fried egg in the fried rice!? The mutany!! The sushi is ok. Everything is just ok. Get it together, hilton head.

I asked for extra vegetables, and because of that everyone else got shorted. On the bright side, I got a million extra onions.

Food was good and acceptable for the price that was paid. The chefs were very entertaining and kept the kids distracted, even though we had 6 kids under 6. I had the filet and scallops and everything was cooked perfectly. Decor is a little dated and could use a cleaning, but I've seen dirtier. We only waited for 20 mins for a party of 12 at about 7:30.

After debating what to have for dinner, we decided on Kurama. We had excellent service from our server and the chef. The chef was very entertaining and made us laugh! We were able to sample the ribeye steak, teriyaki chicken, filet and shrimp. The shrimp was perfect and the teriyaki chicken was flavorful oo! As a fan of dumplings, the dumplings were a welcome surprise! I went with my boyfriend and parents which was a great double date location!

Great food and prices during happy hour. Typical Japanese Steakhouse menu but what is better than other Japanese Steakhouses is sitting with others and making new friends. You will even run into some locals that come here for dinner. The show is typically a good show and the wait staff is usually on it with drink refills. The kids will love it. kuramahhi.com

If we could give zero stars we would. We waited an hour for 2 people to be seated when we were told it would be 30 minutes. Then we got seated the waiter Wad extremely frazzled and very chaotic. It took us an hour from the time we sat down to get the cook. After that everything was ok because our cook was great. Cons: temperature in the resteraunt hot as hades Wait time sucked Hostess did not know how to do their job right Server was all over the place Food was not worth the money we paid. Pros: Sushi was good Cook was great

We had reservations for 4 for 7 pm and still waited 15 minutes. When they finally seated us at hibachi table, we waited another 15 minutes--no one even approached our table to take a drink order. We eventfully got up and left. Never tasted the food but the service was terrible!

Well the reviews are all over the place but I must say the sushi is great. We ate at the bar and the service was great and the sushi better. We ate there twice while on the island.

While there are many reviews on here that are frankly all over the place in sentiment, I'm going to comment more on the one-on-one experience my wife and I had. We took the hour long making class and we're thrilled to learn we were being taught by the owner. We were welcomed with a beverage and a private table with all of the necessary sushi making provisions in front of us. The owner was quick to explain each and every step and of course answer our many questions. When asked his favorite maki roll, without hesitation he started into a oba and cucumber roll which was amazing in its simplicity. Overall we were shown the proper way to assemble, roll, cut and serve maki rolls. While we realize this is just scratching the surface it was a uniquely fun experience anyhow. We'll certainly be back next time we are in HH to try more of what Kurama has to offer.

Just flat out gross. The chef put an egg shell on my plate and then put the rice on top of it and expected me to eat it. Don't go here.

We went for the early-bird special and it was a good value at $18.95 for steak, chicken and shrimp. It was the standard Japanese steakhouse hibachi grill. The service was good, but our chef seemed new and was just okay for entertainment. The rice was a little bland, but not sure why more seasonings weren't added. Some of the other chefs were very good.

Kurama kills it with their flavors. Sure the place could use a cleaning, but so could ever other hibachi restaurant I have ever been to. Kurama has been able to succeed on Hilton Head Island for years. This is a feat many restaurants have been unable to accomplish. They have the support of both the tourist and locals. The Early Bird should not be missed. Call and make a reservation for Early Bird. Great options and affordable prices. Kids love the show. Adults love the flavors of the food. They have two fantastic dipping sauces, Yum Yum Sauce and Ginger Sauce. Even leftovers taste great. Go for a fun, laid-back, casual experience and you will not be disappointed.

This place was good. Service great, good tasty. We had a female chef Jessica, she was great! Maybe lacking confidence a bit but did a fine job, very friendly could tell she was still learning but kinda cool neven had a female as a teppan chef before. The food was very good only issue I had was no egg in rice? Great early bird specials! Was a fun time !

Decor: Blah... Dirty... Service: Horrible This has to be one of the most poorly run restaurants I have ever been to. Do not waste your time. Reserved a table for four and waited 15 minutes to be seated. Once we were seated at a totally over booked table, we never were approached for drinks or water or anything. After waiting for 15 minutes and not getting any service what so ever we decided to walk out. The people around us were very unhappy. I sat and watched a pathetic display of hibachi at the surrounding tables as I waited in disgust. This has to be the worst hibachi restaurant I have sat in. Chef Ramsey would have a field day with this dump.

This place has all of the basics you would expect from a Japanese hibachi place. Lots of food, decent entertainment and high prices. Our experience was good even though we sat down right at 6 and therefor missed the early bird pricing by minutes. The chef that cooked for us was attentive and made it fun for the kids. Food was cooked well and tasted as you would expect. Our chef didn't try throwing food to have us catch it in our mouths but that's okay per they use the shrimp versus eggs like I am used to and if it hits anywhere other than your mouth you have stained clothing. Anyways.. The other thing we didn't know is that kids eat free on a lot of menu items on Thursdays, so plan to go then and even better before 6p to get free kids meals and early bird pricing.

We had high hopes for this place but the the service has been subpar at best. We waited 25 minutes for drinks that were like battery acid and the server could not be more unenthusiastic about helping us.

Despite the negative reviews, we always go and have a great experience. Very good hibachi, service, and entertainment.

Not the best Hibachi but not the worst either..they don't have noodles where most restaurants typically do. Good chicken and filet mignon though. The fried rice was good as well. Overall, not a bad place..

This tepponyaki restaurant is so much better than it has any right to be on the island. I've been coming to Hilton Head for a decade, and I would agree with some of the negative reviews - until my visit yesterday. The whole restaurant looked much cleaner and brighter than it has in the past. The food has always been good, and FYI, since no one seemed to mention, they have an early bird menu from 4:30 to 6 pm, it includes a 3 combo with steak, chicken and shrimp for $16 or $17, you really can't beat that. It also has two rolls for $10 and edamame, and this is one of my two complaints, my sushi (california for my cousin and spicy tuna for me) were rolled really poorly. They were loose and uneven, rice falling apart. Kind of a disgrace to be honest, I might have been more annoyed if the flavors weren't good, but it tasted fine so I guess I was more disappointed visually. My other complaint is that they really skimped on the veggies, I was a little annoyed because I would have ordered double portions of them if I had known they changed that. I have mixed feelings about the service, our chef was excellent, but our server was extremely slow and I was waiting and waiting for water, my cousin actually had another waitress bring him more beer. Service is probably the reason I dropped them a star.

Lame. Great service, but food was tasteless and chef did no tricks and skipped eggs for fried rice. 2 stars is a pity gift, deserved 1.

Hibachi grilled food was delicious! Very well seasoned! Entertaining show! Children loved the performance! Handled a large group well! Would highly recommend! The effort by the staff for our 8 yr. olds birthday was much appreciated! She was all smiles!!

This was a nice break from several nights of seafood restaurants. It was exactly what you'd expect of a hibachi place. The food was delicious and we were all entertained. The best part - there was zero waiting. My four year old ate all of her kids steak. I had sushi, and it was good (but not mind blowing). I'd get scallops next time because the looked amazing.

Bad sushi, very sloppy and mushy and salty. Even worse service, waitress never checked in on us the whole meal. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Do yourself a favor and don't come here

Poor sushi. Tempura rolls with a fried shrimp without anything else. Strange texture to rice. No effort put into rolls. Would not recommend.

This place was terrible. It smells awful. They skimp you on the amount of food compared to other Japanese places. The cooks didn't talk or interact with us. & the food wasn't even good. We won't be back. & for the record we have been here twice we wanted to give it a second try. Thumbs down.

One of my favorite Japanese places!

  • C C.

Inconsistent and slightly below average. Compared to other hibachi places, the quality of the food was pretty poor-fatty chicken, cheap shrimp and poor cuts of beef. The sushi was poorly made too. The pieces were sliced either too thin or too thick.

I usually don't write a bad review, but I just ate hibachi dinner and have been so sick. I am a local and will not be going back. Yuck.

Was a bit weary going to a hibachi place on an island with so many restaurants that offer fresh seafood, but decided to keep an open mind. Much to my dismay, place was noticeably filthy and outdated. Counters that you eat on had leftover crumbs and grease. Burnt rice lined the edge of the grill surface. Everything felt sticky. Finally decided to read other reviews before ordering and I'm glad I did. Opted to just have fried rice because I didn't want to risk getting sick. Rice was good. Chef was entertaining, though I've had better hibachi shows elsewhere. Turns out my brother got sick after eating the ribeye steak. If you're in HHI and care about cleanliness while eating, skip this place and find somewhere else to drop your money.

are you people serious? The food was good but the service was non existent and rediculously rushed. The place is literally filthy and you can see how nasty it is by simply looking at ANYTHING in the restaurant with a little focus.... How the health department allow these restaurants to operate I don't know. I will not return and do not recommend the place. The air conditioner was not working last night by the way. Synopsis: Good food, bad service, bad environment. If you don't mind the negatives, feast away you donkeys!

Sat at Sushi bar. Ordered 4 rolls- Mediterranean, Spicy Crawfish, Philadelphia, and Kurama Special. Mediterranean was the least favorite but that was just personal taste. The other three were AMAZING!!! It was the best Philly roll i have ever had. Plan on going back before my vacation is over.

We have been in HHI for a week. We love Japanese/Teppanyaki style restaurants and frequent them regularly. THANK GOD we didn't eat Sushi HERE. This place is FILTHY - dirty floors, the Ansell system is 100 years old and the oven fans look like they haven't been cleaned in years! However, this is the LEAST of their problems. The food is a MAJOR disappointment. Let's start with the chicken...if you can even call it that. Folks around us were wondering if it was pork??? No, not pork - chicken thighs. What kind of restaurant serves THIGHS, without disclosing it on the menu? What kind of restaurant serves CHICKEN THIGHS AT ALL?????? I ordered the Ribeye. I did not receive a Ribeye. Not even sure what cut of beef it was........ I am familiar with my cuts of meat, and even if I wasn't it's not OK to deceive your customers. I rarely speak to the manager of any establishment. In my 34 years, I have probably spoken to two managers. When I left, I didn't want to cause a scene but I did want to voice my concerns. The hostess, called the manager over. He was a young guy, probably 20's.....he told me that "they only served dark meat; white meat is available upon request". I told him that he really needed to make sure that information was disclosed on the menu going forward. As the people I was with surely would have paid for white meat! I also told him that I was upset about the fact that I ordered a Ribeye but did not receive a Ribeye. He said they only serve Ribeye or filet (I ate neither). When the waitress took our order, she asked Ribeye or Sirloin? Anyway, the message is clear, the meat cuts/quality were less than satisfactory. The rice was a disappointment and the wait staff wasn't knowledgeable. She didn't even know what soda water was? I had to order it three times! Do yourself a HUGE favor and stay AWAY from this place.

Way too Expensive for portions.... Also, they didn't get our order right leaving out items, but charging for them. Lastly, my husband was sick the next day and he is the only one that had any of the tuna, which he told me was pretty lousy and he thinks was bad.... Don't recommend it!

Our party of six recently dined here and the food was pretty good. The restaurant was noisy and it was hard to converse with all members of the party. I paid the tab and learned afterward that one of the members of the party sent his drink back twice. He ordered Bourbon with a splash of water and received water with a splash of Bourbon. The third time they got it right. Upon looking at the bill, I discovered that they charged me for all three drinks. For that reason, I will not return.

We've dined here many times over the years during our vacation visits. The food has decreased in quality. Tonight we noticed that they didn't put egg in the fried rice (not quite the same without it). The taste of the food is good, but just not the same. My wife and I both noticed it. They used dark instead of white meat chicken. It just seems they are scrimping on the quality a bit. The chef was okay, but not as talkative and interactive with the kids as we have had in the past. I think we may look elsewhere next year.

Food was great. Hibachi Chef was personable and friendly. However, the waitress was pretty difficult. I say difficult because I think she didn't understand her job fully. I asked her to bring me another glass of wine, since she just brought my boyfriend a glass for his beer she thought I meant another glass? Hmnnn. I was scared to death (not really) that she was going to bring a wine glass instead.

The sushi was great. Very fresh. The service was nonexistent. We were the customers sitting at a table in the sushi section. We saw the waitress to order and bring our bill. Refills on drinks would have been nice. We will return for the food.
